Technical Director – Environmental Division
Ryan Hanley is looking to build on the proven capability of the company over its 90-year history in meeting engineering and environmental challenges in water, wastewater, flooding, transport and related disciplines.
Ryan Hanley has recently adopted its 5 Year Business Strategic Plan which sets a high level of ambition for growth in that period through development of sustainable engineering solutions to meet the needs of Ireland’s citizens in the 21st century.
We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and results driven individual to lead and grow our Environmental Division. The role will involve leading teams across offices in Dublin, Cork, Castlebar and Galway.
Main Responsibilities:
- Management of the operational and commercial performance of the team, and reporting as a member of the senior management team.
- Managing the interaction between project team members, clients, stakeholders and external subconsultants.
- Working in partnership with other members of the environmental team, managing resources, delegating activities, and monitoring project budgets.
- Interaction with project managers in other sectors or disciplines within the company and the ability to identify, manage and deal with project risk and develop solutions where required.
- Client relationship management.
- Business development including tender and bid management.
- Managing and mentoring teams.
Qualifications:
- A relevant third level Degree in Ecology/Environmental or Science equivalent (Level 8 or higher).
- Chartered Membership, or working towards chartered status, of a professional body such as CIEEM or other appropriate body.
For this role you should have:
- At least 15 years’ environmental/ecological experience, preferably in a consultancy practice, and a strong technical background;
- Experience in the delivery of Environmental Impact Assessment Reports, Ecological Impact Assessment and Habitats Directive Appropriate Assessment required and Water Framework Directive Assessment experience is highly desirable.
- Strong commercial awareness.
- Must be able to work well under pressure and have a proven track record of meeting deliverable deadlines to client satisfaction.
- Excellent knowledge of Irish environmental and planning legislation, policy, and practice.
- Strong project management and communication skills.

Principal or Senior Ecologist (Aquatic/Marine)
Ryan Hanley is seeking an experienced Principal or Senior Ecologist to join our expanding environmental team.
Applicants should have at least 6 years’ experience in a range of infrastructure projects, with particular experience in co-ordinating Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and statutory consent applications. Experience in writing and technical review of Environmental Impact Assessment Reports, Ecological Impact Assessment and Habitats Directive Appropriate Assessment is a distinct advantage.
Minimum Requirements:
- Relevant third level degree (Level 8 or higher);
- Minimum of 6 years’ post qualification experience, most of which will have been gained in an ecology role within planning or environmental consultancy;
- Membership of Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM);
- Delivery of but not limited to: EIAR, NIS, EcIA and AA;
- Leading, coordinating and contributing to EIA projects for major infrastructure projects including all stages of EIA.
- Experience in one or more technical area of relevance to marine EIA e.g., aquatic ecology, marine ecology, ornithology, commercial fisheries;
- Experience of fresh water and marine consent management and compliance;
- Experience in consent related technical assessments such as the Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA), Water Framework Directive (WFD), European Protected Species (EPS) and/or Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ) Assessment.
- Experience in liaison with statutory consultees and the development of environmental mitigation proposals;
- Understanding of the consent and licensing frameworks for terrestrial and offshore infrastructure in Ireland;
- Strong technical report writing skills;
- Excellent planning, project management and leadership skills;
The following would be advantageous:
- Post graduate qualification (Masters or Doctorate);
- Chartered by a professional body such as CIEEM;
- Experience in large scale fresh water, waste water and marine infrastructure projects;
- Experience in tender preparation;
- Experience in managing client relationships.

Principal or Senior Ecologist (Terrestrial)
Ryan Hanley has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Ecologist in our Environmental Team. We would also consider an ambitious Senior Ecologist looking for an exciting challenge.
Applicants should have at least 10 years’ experience in ecological consultancy and a strong technical background. Experience in undertaking Water Framework Directive Assessments, Environmental Impact Assessment Reports, Ecological Impact Assessment and Habitats Directive Appropriate Assessment is highly desirable.
Minimum Requirements:
- Relevant third level Degree (Level 8 or higher);
- 6 years’ post qualification experience in ecological consultancy;
- Membership of Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM);
- Experience in undertaking AA, EIAR, NIS and EcIA assessments and reporting;
- Experience in Bat surveying and Bat Licences and the ability to hold European Protected Species (EPS) licences for bats;
- Strong technical report writing skills;
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and strong and effective negotiating skills;
- Experience of Public Consultation and Stakeholder Consultation;
- Ability to prioritise team workloads and manage resources to ensure efficient delivery of projects;
- Excellent planning and leadership skills;
- Experience of management of financial performance and commercial management on a range of projects.
The following would be advantageous:
- Post graduate qualification (Masters or Doctorate) in Ecology or related subject;
- Chartered by a professional body such as CIEEM.
- Experience in additional surveys (birds, otter, badger) and habitat assessment reporting;
- Experience in large infrastructure projects (flood relief schemes, water and wastewater projects and greenways);
- Experience as Expert Witness;
- Experience in Managing client relationships.

Ecologist – Galway
Ryan Hanley is seeking an experienced Ecologist to join our expanding environmental team.
Applicants should ideally have a minimum of 3 years’ experience working in ecological consultancy and have a strong knowledge of wildlife policy and legislation.
Mininum Requirements:
- Relevant third level Degree (Level 8 or higher);
- A minimum of 3 years’ post qualification experience within the field of ecological consultancy;
- Knowledge of relevant wildlife policy and legislation, and its real-world application;
- Must be willing to work regular unsocial hours associated with bat survey work during the period April to October inclusive;
- Must be comfortable, where appropriate and safe to do so, with working within water bodies to carry out aquatic surveys;
- Largely working from our Galway office but willing to work in our Dublin, Cork and Castlebar offices when required;
- Competent in the use of Microsoft Office;
- QGIS mapping skills;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
The following would be advantageous:
- Membership of Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM);
- Holder of a survey licence for at least one European Protected Species;
- Experienced in aquatic monitoring, surveying and reporting;
- Water framework sampling experience.
