Case Study
Lough Lannagh Footbridge
OVERVIEW
This is an iconic pedestrian bridge giving a new pedestrian access route across Lough Lannagh in Castlebar. It is a 47m long, arch under deck, steel bridge over a narrow point on Lough Lannagh.
The bridge completes a popular walking route in Castlebar Town. Lough Lannagh Pedestrian Bridge is now part of the Castlebar Network part of the Mayo Greenways. The Castlebar network goes from Turlough, through Castlebar, and onto the Newport Road as far as the turn for Islandeady. It is not yet connected to the Great Western Greenway.
The lake and its surroundings form a very attractive leisure amenity close to Castlebar town centre. It was therefore considered imperative that the aesthetics of the bridge are given a high priority. Croagh Patrick forms a prominent backdrop to the bridge elevation when viewed from the car park on the south east bank of the lake.
